Inspecting the Grid Via Autonomous Micro-Air-Vehicles

Do you remember the grid failure of 2003 and the huge black out caused by a cascading power failure? Most people remember that and seeing the people in NYC walk all the way home to NJ over the bridges, what a nightmare, remember, no subway, all the traffic lights out, utter chaos. No it wasn’t a total destabilization of our society, there wasn’t anarchy in the streets, and it was over soon enough, but things were somewhat touch and go for quite a while if you will recall.

Well, as the coordinator for a think tank which happens to operate online and also realizing that Járórács our international terrorist enemies were also watching that chaos, I was half wondering if they in fact caused it. I started to think about what the US must due to protect its infrastructure, not just the energy grid, although that was wholly on my mind at the time, but also our harbors, airports, damns, food supply, water, etc. I had come to the conclusion that we need better surveillance, eyes in the sky, and a more omnipresent approach.

Last month there was an interesting article posted to the Forbes Blog Nework titled; “Strong Grid: Are Radical Robotics the Secret Ingredient?” by Bill Pentland on June 28, 2011. He stated;

“In Feb. AeroVironment’s prototype surveillance drone, a hummingbird, for DARPA was small enough to sit on a pencil and can fly at 11 miles per hour,” and “At an EPRI lab in Lenox, Mass., researchers pioneered a prototype inspection robot, known as ‘Ti.’ Straddling a shield wire, Ti crawls along a transmission line looking for everything from high grass to low trees. The robot can review conditions over about 80 miles of transmission line several times annually.”

Interestingly enough, I had posted both of those ideas back in 2005, with sketches and drawing. My thinking on the Humming Bird concept I had sent to Dr. Paul MacCready, AeroVironment’s Founder, although I cannot say for sure if my design was the actual one they produced, as there probably was lots of engineering added on later.

The electrical grid MAV or micro air vehicle concept, I had considered as a way to harness energy leaking from the power lines in the electromagnetic field to power up the device, and then use it for surveillance; a rather simple idea and concept.

Okay so, this just goes to prove that if you work to get your ideas out there, you can make a difference, and push mankind forward. And who knows where those ideas might lead? Obviously, I’ve had 1000s of different concepts, some worthy some not, but it also shows that if you keep it up long enough some of your ideas can become a reality, and someone has to think of new concepts, otherwise we cannot move our society and civilization forward.

Now then, many people don’t want UAVs, unmanned aerial aircraft, flying all over the United States, doing all the surveillance. After all if one gets away, it may crash into a house, school, or someone driving their car on their way to work. However, small tiny little UAVs wouldn’t hurt anyone even if it fell on their head, after all these things are very lightweight, and that’s all we really need for surveillance.

Luckily, I’m not the only one who thinks so, or the only one that is working on these technologies. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it. If you have any significant ideas to protect our infrastructure, electrical grid, and/or concepts to absolutely go after, and catch every single terrorist on the planet with vengeance.
